Memorable moments from DAY 2 ADAMUN Conference dedicated to the 30th Anniversary of cooperation between the United Nations and Azerbaijan.

WORK, WORK, WORK

The morning starts not with a physical warm-up but a mental one. From 10:00 delegates are working hard on a draft resolution that was kicked out yesterday. The main submitter of the resolution is the United States of America with 13 countries as co-submitters.

I would admit that COP is working as a whole organism and passion is worth to be appreciated. However, in the shadow of active delegates their are ones who use hustling and bustling to enjoy the weather and think about how the world will change itself.

The journalist of NHK World Japan would recommend to these delegates as the source of inspiration and spending quality time reading UN Secretary-General’s Report called “Our common Agenda”. It is written in light words and contains recommendations across 4 broad areas for renewed solidarity between generations, a new social contract in human rights, better management of critical global commons, and global public goods that deliver equitably and sustainably for all.

“Humanity faces a stark and urgent choice: breakdown or breakthrough. The choices we make — or fail to make — today could result in further breakdown and a future of perpetual crises, or a breakthrough to a better, more sustainable, peaceful future for our people and planet”, says UN Secretary-General António Manuel de Oliveira Guterres.

MEXICO AND GABON WORKING ON RECRUITING SPONSORS

Hawkeye of NHK World Japan has noticed that the delegate of Mexico more frequently than usual approaches sponsors of the COP: Doctors without Borders and Greenpeace USA. It seems that together with the delegate of Gabon, these two countries have prepared and already cooperated on the finance side for the strategy that will solve the main issues of climate lethargy. That is the only idea of how your journalist may explain the passiveness of ex-active delegates.

Moral of the story: while working hard on planting crops, do not forget to harvest them on time. You might be left with nothing.

PICKY AND REBEL DELEGATES

Lovely punishments of COP have also taken place today. The victims of today’s punishments became the delegates of Brazil, China, the Russian Federation, Mexico, Albania, France, and India (yeah, we have a lot of breakers). However, using his authority and imminent flow of confidence, the delegate of Brazil refused to pass through punishment. Is there a reason why Brazil possesses privileges in the Committee? The future will show.

The delegate of the Russian Federation step by step gains a bigger voice in the COP with the size of their country. The punishment was about dancing along to the song that the delegate of Russia insisted to choose by herself. However, the picky choice of more witty punishment did not allow the audience to enjoy the dance of picky delegates at the end.

The punishment of La Monde, NHK World Japan, will leave without comment as it seemed very inappropriate in all meaning of this word.

Moral of the story: people tend to take full advantage of not good but also bad days, even if they can stop their inconvenience by themselves.

NEW CANDIDATES FOR CHAIR SEAT

Unfortunately, due to some issues, his Excellency Chair could not participate during the session devoted to working on the Resolution and Panel Discussion led by our media agency.

The delegate of Ireland and even the media representative of La Monde put an eye on the tempting seat of corruption. Hope that sitting there made them feel all spectrum of authority, power, and force. It should alert the Chair that there are several candidates in his place, so once you govern people the next day they govern you — a small scheme of unstable World Order as climate sustainability.

Moral of the story: trust but check :)

ALTRUISTIC PAKISTAN AND RISKY GERMANY

We were delighted to conduct Panel Discussion at COP. Our guests were the delegates of Pakistan and Germany. Questions of NHK World Japan varied from the importance of ecological education for citizens, challenges of maintaining a carbon-neutral policy by 2050, and gender equality policy in achieving climate sustainability.

The delegate of Germany was a very popular speaker who was questioned a lot about the sensitive issue of exploitation of nuclear power as a non-ecological source of energy. The delegate answered straightly about the conducted policy on shutting nuclear facilities and even decreasing the fuel to a minimum by new-started collaboration with Tesla Company. Moreover, talking about the educational cases, the delegate offered his idea of recruiting a new generation of eco-volunteers who as missionaries will spread modern ideas on eco issues around countries.

The delegate of Pakistan was mainly bullied on several points. Firstly, the Russian Federation delegate on their gender inequality policy that is stigmatized, and there is no big difference in addressing women in Pakistan as equal to male representatives. However, the altruistic vibe of the Pakistani delegate assured delegates that sooner or later woman’s voices would be as loud as man’s on issues including climate awareness, ecological education, and involvement in eco-movement. In a big heart, he even pronounced that education on eco-matters would be free for girls if there is a need.

Moral of the story: Big words should be proved by much bigger actions.

CELEBRITY GUESTS

During the Committee session the COP was visited by distinguished guests, Secretary-General of the United Nations — Leyla Mammadzada and the Head of Non-Aligned Movement Youth Network — Ordukhan Gahramanzada. That was the sign of not only careful attention to the process that the Conference is going on but also a sign of bigger to come.

So, at 14:20 we were introduced to Sukhrob Khojimatov — UNDP Resident Representative in the Republic of Azerbaijan. During his brief but fulfilled speech the audience was introduced to the idea and necessity of involving Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) to tackle climate change. He was quite honest with the delegates and media that “delay means death”. So, if in the past we were speaking quietly and calmly about the need for climate shift, now the World is shouting about “climate emergency” and a red flag is raised.

We would agree that the United Nations are focused on all-angled multilateralism in tackling the spectrum of global problems. However, still, political relationships and decisions, economic conditions, and domestic politics are a wide wall for working together.

With it said, Azerbaijan is in need of financial support from multi-stakeholders to deal with climate lethargy.

Issues should not be nationalized.

IN FAVOR!

After hours of rapid preparations and warm debates, the audience is presented with a fully completed draft of the resolution. The main concern drawn in the resolution is the intensity of natural hazards, the disappearance of natural habitats, and the reduction of the absorption of the carbon within the atmosphere.

During the amendments acceptance and voting part the UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan — Madam Vladanka Andreeva was also present. Talking about her feedback after leaving the room, she highlighted amendments made by the United Kingdom. Only one of them has passed which was about presenting the eco-projects by 2025. The other two amendments were about “motivation” for countries to participate in the eco-program via penalizing the countries that will be passive and will not meet the requirements of the accepted eco-friendly projects. Moreover, there was an amendment about putting the limit on the level of emission that is allowed to all fabrics and plants.

You are not in favor of green policy.

Delegates emphasized that the issue is in the misunderstanding of the main goal of the resolution. Despite this matter, it would be better to accept criticism and keep in mind ideas of the United Kingdom approved by the UN.

If you want to know how the COP dealt with the first crisis case and see how hot was the last panel discussion, stay tuned with us for tomorrow!

In conclusion, Day 3 is hopefully expected to be more official but as hardworking and passionate as the first two.
